Macintosh Manager: ClarisWorks Setup tips from Jeff Nelson

Fellow Mac Manager Users,

Here's a possible solution for those who are having trouble with ClarisWorks 4. I don't know if a similar fix will work with AppleWorks 5 since we are upgrading directly to AppleWorks 6 in the near future. All of our workstations are running OS 9.04, MM 1.3 and use the Panels environment. All workstation hard drives are named "Macintosh HD" and contain identical sets of fonts.

I tried a number of combinations but this was the only one I found that would make all ClarisWorks 4 features work. This will make the font menu display correctly, translators, assistants, stationary, library clip art, help menu items, and others will work properly as they should. If you find any problems with this solution, please let me know.

Here's what I did to configure our workstations:

1. From the Login screen, drop to the Finder using the "Command-Shift-Escape" keyboard combination.

2. Move the "Claris" folder from the "System Folder" to the Desktop. It must not exist in the System Folder for this to work. If you have other Claris software that depends on the "Claris" folder, you might have to try a setup similar to this one.

3. Move the ClarisWorks (CW) program folder to the special (Replace • with a Bullet, Option-8) "Other Applications•" folder that must be located in the "Applications" folder. My folder is called "ClarisWorks" for this example.

4. Merge the contents of the "Claris" folder into the "ClarisWorks" program folder so that you end up with the following list of files and folders. I've indicated the type of file in the ()'s after the name.

ClarisWorks (Application)
ClarisWorks Assistants (Folder)
ClarisWorks File Converter (Application, Optional)
ClarisWorks Libraries (Folder)
ClarisWorks Scripts (Folder)
ClarisWorks Stationery (Folder)
ClarisWorks Styles (Folder)
Introduction to ClarisWorks (Application)
Claris Translators (Folder)
Claris XTND System (Document)
ClarisWorks Balloon Help (CW balloon help file)
ClarisWorks Fonts (Document)
ClarisWorks Help (QuickHelp document)
ClarisWorks Labels (Document)
Colors and Gradients (Folder)
Help With QuickHelp (QuickHelp document)
Help With QuickHelp .cnt (QuickHelp document)
QuickHelp (Application)
US English - Hyphenation (Document)
US English - Spelling (Document)
US English - Thesaurus (Document)

5. Delete the "Claris" folder and remaining contents unless some items are needed for other program installations. Do not put it back in the "System Folder". If the "Claris" folder even exists in the "System Folder", this will not work.

6. Make sure helper applications such as "QuickHelp" and "Introduction to ClarisWorks" are enabled and can be launched by other programs. They do not have to be on the user's panel.

7. If you have trouble getting the Font menu to display fonts with their proper style, you may need to delete the "ClarisWorks Fonts" file on the workstation. Then from the Finder (System Access), launch ClarisWorks and the file will be rebuilt correctly.

8. If the translators still do not seem to work, you may need to delete the "XTND Translator List" file from the individual user preference folders on the server. It will be rebuilt correctly the next time they launch the program.

9. Now use Network Assistant to delete the old "Claris" folder from the System Folder on your workstations. Also delete the Clarisworks program folder from the workstations.

10. Finally, with Network Assistant, copy the new "ClarisWorks" program folder to the workstations.

So far this combination has worked well for our installations. I'm hoping to use similar setups for other Claris applications we are still using. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Good Luck!

Move the Claris folder in the System Folder into the Application Support folder.
Make an alias of the Claris folder and put it in the original location (root of System Folder).
Be sure you have the alias named identical to the original.

NOTE: If you are using Claris Home Page, you will need to locate the Dictionary for Home Page. You can use a forced pref for HomePage to get all users updated on this.

Also: You may need to get rid of all the XTND Translator list prefs in users folder on the server. I don't remember if I had to force a new XTND pref or not, you may have to do that as well.
